Can I play Words with Friends free version against a user who has Words with Friends paid version?

I have Words with Friends and my mom also has the app.  We played a game together and she decided to upgrade to the paid version.  According to the advertising: "If you already have the free version, switching to the paid version is easy as pie. Your existing account, games and friends will carry over automatically to this ad-free version."  So why is it that we can no longer play against each other??  It keeps prompting me to purchase the paid version when I am perfectly satisfied with the free version.  How can we play against each other without me being forced to shell out the three bucks for the paid version?  Thanks!

It is compatible. I have the paid version, and my friends play with me on their free versions perfectly fine.

If it doesn't work, you may want to open a new account and try again.

Did your Mom mistakenly change her user name when she upgraded and forget to tell you the new user name?

If not ask on the Zynga Help Desk.
