My opponent has had both blank tiles on 9 of the 10 times we've played. The other time I got one. Is this just chance?

She has the paid version I have the free one - could there be a connection?

Anyone who thinks tiles are distributed randomly is living on Fairy Tale Lane and surrounded by gumdrop houses. This game goes through hot and cold stretches. If you play the same opponent religiously, all you can hope for is that the streaks balance out over time. I also personally think the game rewards certain styles of play with better letters, but that's up for debate. In my mind, the "randomness" of the tile distribution is laughable.

Take the game I'm playing right now. Off the draw, I had 5 vowels + S, H. I traded in four vowels + the H. Got back 4 vowels + the F. Next turn, I played F, I. Got back 2 vowels. Next turn, played A, E. Got back my original H and another vowel. Next turn, I played O, E. Got back I, E. Are you freakin' kidding  me?!?! If you think that many vowels can be distributed at random, you're crazy.
