Why do the points deduct at the end of the match?

I was playing and I was losing by like 15, then i played a 2 point word and i ended up winning by 2..I just wanted to know why my opponents deducted at the end.

The most likely reason is that when the game ends due to the bag being empty and one player playing his/her last tile, all the points on the other player's rack are subtracted from that player's score and added to the score of the player who went out.  If your opponent had enough tiles on his/her rack that were worth enough points when you went out, that can tip the balance enough to turn a loss into a win.
